Trust Me Mate

Friendship asks something profoundly human of us: trust.

In Trust Me Mate, Mouono reflects on the sacredness of friendship—what these bonds once meant, what we make of them, and what they become in a world where placing our trust in another person can sometimes feel like an act of risk.

The work emerged during a period when stories of alleged poisonings were circulating frequently in Cameroon, often accompanied by the disturbing suggestion that someone close to the victim was responsible. For Mouono, these stories raised a painful contradiction: what happens when the very relationships in which we seek safety become a source of suspicion?

Two companions sit together, drinks in hand. On the surface, the moment could be ordinary—friends sharing time, conversation, perhaps laughter. Yet the title changes everything.

Trust me, mate.

Is it reassurance? A promise? Or a phrase we desperately want to believe?

Through this ambiguity, Mouono invites us to consider what friendship ultimately requires from us: vulnerability, loyalty, and the willingness to place something precious in another person’s hands.

Because friendship may begin with companionship—but its deepest test is trust.
