Annah Nkyalu
Annah Nkyalu and the Alchemy of Ink
Annah Lot Nkyalu is an extraordinary artist whose work commands attention—not just for its stunning quality, but for the surprising simplicity of the tool she wields: a ballpoint pen. Yes, a pen. That everyday object most of us take for granted becomes, in Annah’s hands, a magic wand that transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.
I first encountered her breathtaking work through her solo exhibition My Blue Eyes on an art website. It was impossible not to want to learn more. Much to my delight, we arranged a video call—and what followed was an unforgettable conversation.
Annah’s artistic journey is as rich and layered as her pen strokes. She shared stories of childhood drawings scribbled during school hours—sometimes earning punishment, but always revealing an early spark. That spark grew into a flame through her academic journey, which led her to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Yet it was the ever-present pen—always in her hand during school—that ultimately became her chosen artistic medium.
As a young Tanzanian figurative artist, Annah’s work gives voice to the identity and inner worlds of her generation. Her subjects are drawn from daily life—both known and unknown faces, real and imagined—but always familiar. Through her art, she reflects the strength and fragility of her society, exploring themes of culture, emotion, and the ongoing quest for selfhood in a rapidly evolving world.
She finds inspiration in people’s expressions, in spontaneous moments, and in the quiet truths revealed by observation—whether in the real world or through documentary films. Over the years, she has experimented with ballpoint pen on various surfaces—paper, canvas, and wood—sometimes blending it with acrylics, oils, pastels, photography, or fabric. Each piece is the result of hours, sometimes days, of meticulous layering, requiring both patience and precision.
Annah’s achievements are as impressive as her technique. She has exhibited her work across Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Canada, Italy, and Germany. She won the Tanzania Fine Artists Competition (2019), was named second runner-up in Young Upcoming Artists by Mulika Organization (2022), and in 2023 was selected for a prestigious art residency in Ireland, supporting children with cancer through a partnership between Tumaini La Maisha, Killruddery House, and the Irish Embassy.
Despite her growing international acclaim, Annah remains grounded in her mission. Now based in Dar es Salaam, she not only continues to create powerful work but also dedicates herself to mentoring young artists—encouraging them to embrace their talent, be bold in their expression, and never doubt their identity as artists.
For me, Annah is more than just an accomplished creator. She is a radiant force of positivity, patience, and purpose—an artist with a vision and the courage to see it through. I left our conversation feeling reenergized and grateful to count her as a part of the ARTssembly community.
Thank you, Annah, for sharing your world and for reminding us of the power that even a simple pen can hold.
