From Clay to Canvas: Hezekiah’s Cultural Alchemy

I find Hezekiah’s works as beautiful as they are intriguing. To me, they stand completely apart from conventional figurative art, and during our conversation, Hezekiah confirmed that this was indeed his intention.

In a Nigerian art market where portraiture abounds and countless artists showcase remarkable talent, Hezekiah has managed to distinguish himself with a chromatically rich, hybrid style that exudes both elegance and originality. His artistic identity is unmistakable: most of his figures have pots for heads.

This choice is deeply rooted in Yoruba culture, where the pot carries profound significance. More than a vessel, it is a tool, a decoration, and a symbol in rites such as marriage and initiation. The head, meanwhile, is regarded as the most important part of the body. By replacing the human head with the pot, Hezekiah asserts both his cultural heritage and his identity as a Yoruba artist, while opening up powerful avenues for reflection. His canvases become a documentation of untold histories, reminding us of the significance, utility, and splendor of pots beyond their everyday function.

But Hezekiah’s vision does not stop there. He loves to weave together representations, symbols, and motifs from various cultural traditions, creating a vibrant tapestry that transcends geography and time. His backgrounds, often adorned with Adire motifs—a fabric tradition from southwestern Nigeria, historically made by Yoruba women—pay tribute to his late mother, who once sold such textiles. In doing so, his art becomes not only personal but also profoundly communal.

Born in 1995 in Osun State, Nigeria, Hezekiah has channeled this lineage—rooted in pottery and textile culture—into paintings rendered in acrylic and oil. A full-time artist, he practices daily out of love for his craft, and despite the challenges of the profession, he cannot imagine doing anything else. His works have already gained recognition through numerous exhibitions, and his artistic journey continues to thrive, fueled by passion, discipline, and an unshakable commitment to sharing his cultural roots.

Hezekiah, continue to fascinate us with your work—I wish you the very best in your career.
