Daniel Rukundo

Whether figurative or abstract, Daniel’s works evoke a sense of admiration and well-being in me. I find that his art goes far beyond aesthetics to speak an emotional language with touching finesse.

When I contacted him out of nowhere on Instagram, Daniel initially thought I was a scammer, and I don’t blame him given their large numbers on the platform. After I sent him the first draft of the article you’re reading (based on voice notes he’d sent me as a precaution), we met via video call.

Daniel told me about his artistic journey; from discovering his passion for art at an early age, making illustrations for his mother who was a teacher at Sunday school, or in front of his classmates during science class at the teacher’s request, to entering art competitions in high school and losing finals to art students, which made him realize that he needed to improve his artistic skills. It was this realization that prompted him to pursue an art curriculum and become the talented artist he is today.

Daniel’s dream as an artist is to develop the Rwandan art market, and then extend it to East Africa, the continent, and so on.

In his opinion, many talented young artists in Rwanda end up giving up their dream of becoming artists, because they can’t make a living from their art. Daniel wants to do something about this and has lost no time putting his words into action.

In 2023, he joined an art incubator program, which aims to professionalize young artists and help them navigate the art market. His goal is to make a living from his art and help other artists do the same. I admire his approach and support him wholeheartedly.

Daniel, I think you have everything it takes to succeed, and I’m convinced that your talent and determination will lead you to a highly successful artistic career. Your willingness to support other artists inspires me enormously.
