INSPIRATION
Contested Territories Series
As forests and wild spaces are cleared to make way for cities, farms, and industries, animals are pushed out of their natural habitats, disrupting ecosystems and threatening biodiversity.
This series of paintings seeks to subtly highlight humanity’s voracious attack on nature, as well as the struggle other species face in adapting to these challenges imposed by a co-stakeholder—humankind. It ultimately presents this uneasy coexistence as a new, troubling normal, one that carries an unexpected and unsettling beauty.
It is important to note that while some species perish, others move out of harm’s way, contending with what remains of an ever-shrinking natural habitat.
Meanwhile, a handful choose to cohabit with humans regardless—a development that has further sparked our curiosity and, at times, our unease.
It is no longer unusual to spot eagles in major cities, nesting on high-rise rooftops fashioned from repurposed waste, surviving by soaring above skylines while scanning the streets below for human pets. Pythons have been found slithering through basements, alligators lurking in city drainage systems, anthills emerging in urban parks, and more.
These scenes are becoming alarmingly common. Yet when territories naturally allocated to wildlife are encroached upon, what else should we expect? Encroachment is not merely an issue of space—it is a matter of survival for animals, and ultimately for us.
Protecting natural habitats is therefore not only about saving animals; it is about preserving the balance of life itself. If we fail to act, the loss will not be theirs alone, but ours to bear as well.
