Dudu Arugha Emmanuel

Contemplating Dudu’s intoxicating works, there was no doubt in my mind that this was the work of a great master. The finesse, delicacy, and chromatic harmony of his art won me over immediately. Even before I met him, my intuition told me I would learn a great deal from him.

And I did. My discussion with this jovial, perceptive, cultured, and fully accomplished artist lasted almost two hours! I came away with a stronger and more mature view of the arts. Dudu’s artistic career spans 25 years, and he’s not about to call it a day. His art is his life. His practice is constant and disciplined. He feels fortunate that, from an early age, his parents encouraged him to pursue a career in the arts. They didn’t hesitate to support him despite the limited means at their disposal.

Dudu was born in Benin City (Nigeria), where he started his education. After graduating in 1999 with a higher national diploma, he immediately took the plunge as a full-time artist, while later graduating with a Bachelor’s degree (BA) in Visual Arts, a Master’s Degree (MA) in Visual Art History from the University of Lagos, and a Master’s Degree (MFA) in studio painting from Delta State University. Dudu has participated in countless exhibitions (more than 30), received several awards for his artistic excellence, and had his work auctioned off on many occasions. Despite this long list of achievements (which I cut short), he remains more concerned with the quality of his work than with prestige.

He draws his inspiration from his Nigerian environment and culture and often aims to convey their influence through the faces and scenes he depicts in his works. A lover of color, he sublimates his depictions with harmonious hues, and does so with striking realism, without veering towards photorealism.

When asked what his artistic mission is, Dudu says with a smile that he sees no point in imposing one on himself. For him, it is important to enjoy practicing his art and make a living from it. The public is free to interpret his work, and if they find happiness in it, so much the better.

Dudu also gave me invaluable advice on navigating the art world wisely. Thank you so much, Dudu for a most enjoyable and enlightening conversation.
