From Mind to Multiverse — The Afrofuturism of Dumbor Debeeh

Dumbor Debeeh, also known as Dr. Imagination, is a Nigerian-born artist whose work struck me like a bolt of lightning—radiating extraordinary creativity, poetic depth, and soul-shifting beauty. From the moment I encountered his art, I was pulled into his world—an Afrosurrealist universe where imagination reigns and the boundary between nature, technology, and culture is endlessly explored.

Dumbor was born and raised in the culturally rich Gokana Local Government Area of Ogoni, Rivers State, Nigeria. A graduate of the Department of Arts and Design Technology at Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, he was a quiet, observant child. Struggling with literacy early on, he found refuge and power in his ability to observe and recreate the world around him with astonishing detail. This photographic memory became his first artistic superpower.

At a young age, he began studying the lines of nature: leaves, trees, animals, the texture of bark, and light. Using only a ballpoint pen and the canvas of his mind, he translated these details into art. What began as a childhood escape quickly evolved into a passionate pursuit of mastery.

Today, Dumbor is an acclaimed visual artist and activist whose bold imagination and skill have earned him numerous accolades:

  • Winner of Art Battle Africa, Nigeria (2017)
  • 1st Prize – RSG/Dubai International Painting Competition, UAE (2021)
  • 3rd Prize – BIC Art Master Africa Competition (2022)

Known for his Afro-futuristic surrealism, Dumbor merges traditional African motifs with futuristic and digital elements to create vibrant, dreamlike compositions. His art reflects the belief that imagination is the root of all art, and through it, he reimagines African identity, questions our relationship with nature and technology, and dares us to envision a better future.

“In the strokes of my pen, I find liberation—expressing the complexities of existence in the simplest lines.”

Dr. Imagination’s works are not only aesthetically powerful but intellectually resonant. They tackle societal issues with subtlety and depth, inviting viewers into a dialogue about peace, resilience, movement, and transformation. Whether using ballpoint pen, acrylics, or mixed media, Dumbor’s hand expresses emotion and story in every detail.

Through a unique visual language, he illuminates the symbiotic relationship between Artificial Intelligence and Natural Intelligence, revealing the transformative potential of their union. His vision of a world where technology and nature coexist harmoniously is as futuristic as it is deeply rooted in African cultural wisdom.

“Art is the bridge that connects the past, present, and future—weaving stories of resilience and hope.”

Despite the acclaim, what impressed me most during our conversation was Dumbor’s humility, optimism, and radiant imagination. His dream? To share his work with the world—to uplift, to inspire, and to spark a deeper appreciation of the African narrative in all its complexity and beauty.

And with the power and authenticity of his voice, I have no doubt he will.

Thank you, Dr. Imagination, for the mind-expanding conversation and for reminding us that the future of art—and the world—can be beautiful, conscious, and wildly creative.
