Dennis Asante

Dennis’s self-portrait on Instagram, entitled Focus, let me know immediately that I was looking at a hyperrealistic prodigy. Indeed, it’s hard to tell the difference between a photo and a drawing with this exceptionally talented artist. Every stroke, every hue, and every emotional nuance is reproduced with the utmost precision, capturing, in a way, a part of the subject’s soul.

After exchanging a few exchanges, Dennis and I met by video call, during which I learned more about him and his artistic background.

Dennis began drawing in elementary school where he realized he had an artistic gift. However, since he was also a good student in other subjects, he was encouraged to follow a traditional academic path. As a result, he excelled in high school while practicing his art as a hobby.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck Ghana in 2020, Dennis, confined to his home, began to focus more on his art. The event that pushed him to devote himself fully to it was his discovery on Instagram of the works of Kelvin Okafor, a British hyperrealist artist specializing in pencil portraits. On seeing them, Dennis was overwhelmed by the quality of the work and decided to perfect his art to reach the same level.

Through constant, disciplined practice, while continuing to follow Kelvin’s practice religiously, Dennis has now achieved a level of hyperrealism that amazes even himself, and he has no intention of stopping. The more he invests in his art, the more inspired he feels and wants to share his inspiration with the world.

Through his art, Dennis emphasizes the need to focus on one’s strengths rather than weaknesses to move forward and thrive in life. His high-level art reflects his determination throughout his artistic journey, littered with many challenges; financial difficulties, limited opportunities, lack of resources, and many others.

However, Dennis remains steadfast and knows that he has found his life’s mission: to inspire a generation of artists through his art and to confirm to people that their dreams are attainable as long as they decide to invest in achieving them.

One of Dennis’s big artistic dreams is to see his art exhibited in major art institutions, and why not, alongside Kelvin Okafor’s?

Thank you so much, Dennis, for sharing your inspiring journey with me. Given your dedication to your art and the lightning speed at which you’re evolving as an artist, I do not doubt that you are about to shake the world with even more amazing art.
