Ayela-Uwangue Nosawema

I love the “magnificent chaos” Ayela’s work draws me into. His art intrigued me to no end at first sight, so I had to get in touch with this artist to discover the depths of his artistic universe, which I did. A few days later, we met via video call.

From an early age, Ayela was fascinated by the arts and knew that this discipline would play a major role in his life. His art-loving mother also encouraged him to study art, so everything was lined up for Ayela to become nothing less than an artist.

As a versatile/multi-media artist, Ayela is mainly inspired by women, in particular their place and role in Nigerian society, and the influence that culture and societal “norms” have on them. Before transposing her in abstract form onto canvas, Ayela studies the Nigerian woman from different angles: her ways of speaking, her ways of acting, her behaviors, her aspirations, her perceptions of the world, her dreams…

Once the mood and story to be told in his painting are established in his mind, he does some research to support it and begins his composition on paper or canvas. Then comes the base coat of paint, after which Ayela gives free rein to his inspiration, through a trial-and-error process, where he tries to strike a balance between realism and the expression of his feelings. He uses a variety of materials including acrylic, spray paint, crayons, charcoal, and oils, and the doodles in his works are intended to give them flow and rhythm.

Through his art, Ayela seeks to pay tribute to Nigerian women, who often demonstrate courage and resilience in many spheres of their lives. More broadly, he aims to raise public awareness of the importance of the feminine essence in any society, and of the need to treat women with love and respect to make the world a better place.

Ayela and I also talked about the price of art materials in Nigeria, which he feels has turned art into a luxury discipline. Despite that, he remains determined to continue perfecting his art, exploring new techniques, and enriching his style. His dream is to make his art an artistic reference not only in Nigeria but worldwide.

Thank you, Ayela, for this authentic and inspiring conversation.
