Quiana R. Lewis

I find Quiana’s art bold, profound, and poetic. In my opinion, she brilliantly illustrates women, particularly black women, and feminine energy in all their splendor, power, and vulnerability. Under the spell of her magnetic works, I couldn’t resist contacting this artist who, after consulting her website, seemed relatively mysterious to me, which aroused my curiosity even more.

And so, a few days later, Quiana and I met on a Zoom call.

Born and raised in New York in a family of Afro-Caribbean origin (Trinidad and Tobago), Quiana found herself immersed in a vibrant mix of cultures from an early age, where she quickly developed an attraction to, and then an aptitude for, art.

As in many immigrant families, professional success is paramount and often associated with professions perceived as being at the top of the social ladder; doctors, lawyers, architects, etc. As these professions do not include that of an artist (well, not yet 😁), Quiana felt compelled to pursue a different path, eventually studying biology in college. But the artist in her had not said her last word and was quick to call her to order once her studies were completed.

Indeed, after school, Quiana began to devote mind, body, and soul to her art, and over the past three years, she has continued to perfect her craft, exploring various mediums and techniques to cement her creative vision.

Drawing on her American and Trinidadian upbringing and her African roots, she imbues her works with a unique blend of imagery and symbolism. With her vivid colors, intricate patterns, and challenging themes, she seeks not only to captivate the viewer but to inspire them to pursue their passions without fear.

It was in this spirit of adventure, self-discovery, and personal development that Quiana recently traveled to South Africa, where she was able to immerse herself in South African culture and explore her African roots in greater depth, allowing her to grow both personally and artistically.

Today, with each stroke of her brush, Quiana strives to convey a message of empowerment and self-discovery, encouraging others to embrace their true calling and pursue their dreams. Through her art, she hopes to ignite a spark of inspiration in others, reminding them that it’s never too late to pursue what sets the soul on fire.

Thank you, Quiana, for such a pleasant and authentic discussion. Let me add that your murals are equally breathtaking.
