Through the Eyes of Tomorrow — Afeez Aregbede and the Power of Childhood

At just 25 years old, Aregbede Afeez Oluwaseyi paints with a depth and mastery far beyond his years. I still remember the moment I stumbled upon his work on Instagram—I was completely blown away. The richness of his visual language, the sensitivity in his compositions, and the soulfulness of his brushwork left no room for hesitation. I reached out immediately, eager to learn more about the artist behind such powerful pieces—and to invite him to join the ARTssembly.

Based in Ibadan, Nigeria, Afeez is a visual artist working primarily in oil and acrylic on canvas. His practice explores identity, memory, and the quiet strength of everyday life, all rendered through bold colors, rhythmic patterns, and an unmistakable sense of emotional gravity. With an NCE from the Federal College of Education in Abeokuta, and now pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Afeez is steadily carving his place in the contemporary art scene. His work has already been featured in international showcases such as the INC Art Fair in Austria and the Swiss Red Cross Gala in Gstaad.

From the moment we spoke, Afeez’s energy was contagious. He talks about art with such fervor that you can’t help but listen—and admire. What moved me most was hearing about the unwavering support of his family, especially his mother, who has been his steadfast pillar since the beginning of his artistic journey. That foundation, paired with his passion, drive, and extraordinary talent, is a powerful combination. I have no doubt he will reach remarkable heights.

Afeez’s creative world centers on childhood—not in a sentimental or romanticized way, but as a profound lens through which to view society. “Children are not passive subjects,” he told me, “but carriers of strength, vulnerability, and unspoken wisdom.” In his paintings, children often appear alone, suspended in bold, patterned spaces that evoke both quietude and narrative tension. These geometric and symbolic backgrounds draw inspiration from traditional African textiles and artists like Gustav Klimt, yet are reimagined to tell stories grounded in the present.

For Afeez, childhood is both mirror and memory—a visual archive capturing dignity, resilience, and emotional depth. His work challenges us to truly see children: not simply as our future, but as reflections of who we are now, shaped by the world they inherit.

To Afeez—thank you for the invigorating encounter. I take your invitation to come to Nigeria and experience your work in person very seriously. Your presence in the ARTssembly is a gift, and I look forward to seeing where your journey takes you.
