INSPIRATION
This artwork is from the artist’s series entitled Kumerica, which refers to the Kumerica movement, a cultural and social phenomenon that emerged in Ghana, particularly in the city of Kumasi, which is the capital of the Ashanti Region. The term “Kumerica” is a fusion of Kumasi and America, reflecting a blend of local culture with global influences, particularly from African American culture.
The movement gained popularity in the early 2020s, driven by the youth of Kumasi, and is closely tied to the Afrobeats music genre.
In this piece, the artist captures the essence of a quintessential Kumerican, striking a bold and dynamic posture often seen in music videos or photos, embodying the unrestrained energy, confidence, and cultural pride that define the movement. The figure radiates the unique blend of modern swagger and traditional pride, a visual testament to the vibrant spirit of Kumasi’s youth as they carve out their own global identity.
