INSPIRATION
For this piece, I was inspired by a beautifully animated fantasy drama film called ‘The Red Turtle’ that I watched with my daughter. The film tells the story of a man who becomes shipwrecked on a deserted island and meets a giant red female turtle who later turns into a woman. From there their love story is born. It has no dialogue but moved me to tears (a fact that I made sure passed as dust in the eye in front of my daughter). So, including a turtle in this piece was a way of reminding me of that nice father-daughter moment.
For the character Mimi Wata, I was inspired by Mami Wata (Mother Water) who is a water spirit celebrated throughout much of Africa. ‘At once beautiful, protective, seductive, and dangerous, she is often portrayed as a mermaid, a snake charmer, or a combination of both. A rich array of arts surrounds her, as well as a host of other aquatic spirits–all honoring the essential, sacred nature of water. She is widely believed to have “overseas” origins, and her depictions have been profoundly influenced by representations of ancient, indigenous African water spirits, European mermaids, Hindu gods and goddesses, and Christian and Muslim saints.1
