INSPIRATION

Hope in Captivity interrogates the fragile boundary between resilience and suppression, essence and appearance. At its center sits a faceless figure—its head replaced by a worn-out shoe, now flowering vibrantly atop a pressurized gas cylinder. A metaphor for endurance, the shoe-blossom becomes a crown of survival, but also a question: Can one truly bloom if unseen?

The figure’s chest is rendered as a birdcage containing two doves—symbols of inner life and longing. One stretches upward; the other hesitates, encapsulating the tension between the desire to escape and the fear of the unknown. Behind them, smoky hues whisper of trauma and societal pressure. The entire composition wrestles with an uneasy question: Is resilience a form of freedom—or a well-rehearsed performance?

Echoing themes of internal captivity and spiritual suffocation, the work offers no easy answers. Instead, it is a quiet meditation, asking not just whether we can breathe—but whether we are truly living, or merely surviving on display.
