INSPIRATION

In Africa, where culture and heritage are deeply intertwined, a woman’s hairstyle holds a strong connection to her identity. The diverse and intricate African hairstyles—such as the Afro, Bantu knots, Ṣùkú, Pàtẹ̀wọ, Ìpàkọ́ Ẹ̀lẹ́dẹ̀, and Korobá, among many others—have not only adorned the heads of African women but have also stood as powerful symbols of pride, resilience, and cultural heritage.

This body of work, titled “Our Crown, Our Identity,” celebrates the beauty and significance of these hairstyles through a series of portraits of African women.

The Afro, in particular, symbolizes the embrace of natural beauty and stands as a bold statement of self-acceptance and empowerment. Each portrait highlights women who wear their natural hair with pride, capturing the essence of self-love and the reclamation of identity and roots.

“Our Crown, Our Identity” is a visual exploration of the deep connection between African women and their hairstyles. It serves as a powerful reminder that our crowns—both literal and symbolic—have long been sources of pride and essential expressions of identity. These women wear their crowns with pride, affirming not only their place in history but also their role in shaping the future.
