Yamila Sarmiento

Yamila’s works have a chromatic richness and finesse that really inspire me. I find them infused with life and passion. After discovering this talented artist’s work on Instagram, I contacted her swiftly. She got back to me right away and we agreed on a video call.

Yamila drew a lot as a child. A growing hobby that led her to study art at Sheridan College’s Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design, Canada’s largest art school.

In her art, she strives to capture the vibrancy of life through bright, vivid colors and dynamic compositions. Each piece is a reflection of her deep-rooted connection to black culture and identity, exploring themes of family, relationships, and self-love. She believes these are essential narratives that deserve recognition and celebration, yet are often overlooked in mainstream media.

Portraiture is a particular fascination of hers. Through each brushstroke, she aims to convey the raw emotion and energy present in every human experience. She hopes that her art sparks meaningful conversations and prompts viewers to reflect on their own perceptions and biases.

In addition to being a painter, Yamila is also a graphic designer and has extensive and varied experience in print and web design, art direction, brand development, and illustration.

Thank you, Yamila for sharing your many artistic talents with us! Keep up the amazing work!
