Markus Cza
Curious about the art scene in Brazil, a country whose culture is strongly influenced by Africa due to the slave trade and slavery, I started looking for artists there.
I had the pleasure of discovering Markus, whose works captivated me with their finesse, beauty, and originality, blending elements of Afro-Brazilian culture, notably capoeira, with pictorial elements of ancient Egypt. Markus is deeply attached to his African roots and draws his inspiration from the pre-classical art of ancient Egypt, nature, ancient knowledge (symbols and sacred geometry), memories of his childhood, and his life in society.
Through his art, he aims to re-establish a spiritual and historical link between Afro-Brazilian people and their African ancestors in Africa, but also his counterparts of African descent worldwide.
His artistic career began as a graffiti artist at the age of 16. Inspired by older graffiti artists in his neighborhood, Markus began practicing at home, doodling, painting fabric and banners, then using spray paint at school events. This led him to research art history, black artists, and the history of blacks in America and on the African continent. From then on, the features of his work began to change, becoming rooted in deeper ideas, notably the social, physical, and psychological emancipation of the black population through education, culture, and art.
One of his greatest dreams as an artist would be to see his work become a cultural and historical legacy of Brazil, radiating around the world while helping to sensitize current and future Brazilian generations to educational, social, and political advancement.
Funny thing; since I speak very little and very poorly Portuguese, and Markus speaks neither English nor French, he graciously sent me information about him in Portuguese, which I translated into French (thanks DeepL ) before writing this text.
Many thanks for your very professional collaboration, Markus.
