STORIES IN TEXTURE: THE ART OF KING NGABONZIZA

King and I agreed to a Zoom call after a few thoughtful email exchanges. I had first been drawn to his impasto paintings — works that, to me, tell stories with extraordinary sensitivity. Each canvas radiates emotion and finesse, revealing the heart of an artist deeply connected to his roots. Our hour-long conversation added even greater depth to my admiration for his work.

King Ngabonziza, a Rwandan figurative artist born in Musanze, discovered his passion for art early in life. His journey began in the village where stories, traditions, and the rhythms of daily life shaped his imagination. Convinced that art was his calling, he eventually persuaded his parents to let him pursue it fully. At the renowned École d’Art de Nyundo, he refined his technique, developing his signature impasto style — rich in texture, movement, and feeling.

For King, painting is more than expression; it is storytelling in its purest form. His art reflects the human condition — resilience, hope, and transformation — using bold brushstrokes to communicate what words cannot.

Through color and texture I tell the stories that shaped me — the memories of my community, the values that define us, and the beauty we sometimes forget to see.”

Beyond painting, King is also an accomplished sketch artist whose drawings often serve as the foundation for his larger works. Each piece, whether drawn or painted, carries the same intent: to preserve culture, celebrate identity, and awaken empathy.

A passionate advocate for children’s rights, King uses his platform to spotlight the struggles and dreams of young people in his community. His art has been featured in notable exhibitions such as the Isaliyuti Art Festival and Ishuri Art Exhibition, and displayed in respected galleries including Envision Rwanda, Mads Kigali, and Izihirwe Art Studio.

Today, King aspires to use art as a force for change — nurturing Rwanda’s art scene, inspiring emerging artists, and bringing the stories of his homeland to the global stage.
