Bola Obatuyi

Reimagining Beauty Through Fabric and Femininity

I find Bola’s works dazzling. They enliven and energize me while seducing me with their aesthetic appeal. Naturally, their magnetic power prompted me to learn more about this artist, and a few days later, we met via video call.

Born in September 1992 in Ibadan, Nigeria, Bola’s artistic journey began in childhood in her aunt’s tailoring shop. Fascinated by the colorful fabrics she saw there, she begged for scraps to experiment with, and soon began turning them into her own creations. When her aunt discovered one of these early pieces, she encouraged her niece to follow a path of creative expression. From doodles on walls to cardboard crafts, the young artist nurtured her gift with passion and discipline, eventually studying Fine Arts at Auchi Polytechnic, Edo State, where she graduated with a Higher National Diploma in 2017. She has been a full-time artist ever since.

Her practice is both laborious and inventive. Each piece is handmade through a meticulous process that begins with template drawing and fabric cutting, then evolves into pinning, sewing, and painting. By weaving together salvaged materials, Ankara fabrics, acrylics, and oils, Bola creates vibrant, textured compositions. She riffs on traditional African attire and weaving patterns, sometimes ripping fabrics apart and reassembling them into bold collages. The result: optical illusions, acid drips, pixelated glitches, and layered visual narratives that challenge perception while celebrating beauty.

Her art explores themes of body positivity, sisterhood, and the deconstruction of misconceptions around femininity—particularly the belief that a woman’s value lies primarily in physical attractiveness. Instead, her canvases honor women’s resilience, creativity, and power while also promoting African cultures. She draws inspiration from both her environment and a wide range of artists, including Andy Warhol, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, and Bisa Butler.

I’m expressing myself and embracing my femininity through my choice of material. Using Ankara attires, waste fabrics, acrylic colors, and oil is my greatest joy because I always want to turn discarded things into beauty and wealth.

She aims to promote African cultures, inspire upcoming artists worldwide, and show parents the importance of nurturing a child’s artistic spirit. Above all, I want to find solutions to people’s lives through my artistic ideology.

Speaking with her was a true pleasure. As I told her during our conversation, her paintings are as elegant as she is—because this artist not only creates beauty on canvas but also radiates creativity, intelligence, and authenticity in the way she engages with the world.
