Ganiyat Abdulazeez
Where Nature Breathes Through the Canvas
Ganiyat’s art possesses a profound and transcendent beauty that soothes the soul. Every time I immerse myself in her work, allowing my eyes to trace every intricate detail, I experience a deep sense of serenity and renewal. This captivating quality of Ganiyat’s creations sparked my curiosity and led me to reach out to her to explore her creative universe more deeply.
A few days later, I had the privilege of connecting with her via video call. My intuition had prepared me to meet a painter whose art is not only visually enchanting but also healing. I was moved—but not surprised—to find in her presence the same calm and wisdom reflected in her paintings.
As she shared her story and artistic vision, it became clear that she is an artist in perfect harmony with her calling—one whose work goes beyond stunning aesthetics to offer a space of reflection and profound renewal.
Ganiyat draws inspiration from her own experiences and from the lives of those around her. Her art is a tribute to the restorative power of nature, especially the vitality found in plants and herbs. Her breathtaking figures are often adorned with floral motifs such as the coral plant (Jatropha multifida) and the clover leaf, symbols of the deep connection between beauty and healing.
These recurring elements are rooted in her childhood, when she personally benefited from the curative properties of plants—long before she ever picked up a brush.
Born in 1996 and based in Lagos, Nigeria, Ganiyat earned both her National Diploma (2017) and Higher National Diploma (2021) from the prestigious Yaba College of Technology. A versatile artist, she explores a wide range of media, including pastel, graphite, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic, and, above all, oil paint—her preferred medium. Her process layers narratives drawn from her life and her environment, often centering on people who have found healing through nature’s gifts.
Guided by a therapeutic mission, Ganiyat believes that every living being—rich or poor, human or animal—yearns for healing. She affirms that God created plants for the benefit of all and concealed within them diverse healing properties long before the invention of medicine.
Inspired by this conviction, she envisions collaborating with medical professionals to raise awareness about both common and rare conditions, such as asthma and vitiligo. Her recent series focusing on individuals with vitiligo seeks to shine a compassionate light on their experiences, celebrating their unique beauty while challenging societal perceptions and reaffirming that diversity is a reflection of divine richness, not a measure of worth.
Her works have been collected both locally and internationally, resonating with viewers who recognize in them not just visual splendor but an invitation to wholeness. Ganiyat reminds us that art, when born of faith and empathy, becomes a vessel for restoration.
Thank you, Ganiyat, for creating art that inspires, uplifts, and heals. May your journey continue to blossom with beauty that nourishes the soul and honors the sacred harmony between nature and humanity.
