Darlington Irokanulo
Colors That Speak, Stories That Endure – WITH DARLINGTON IROKANULO
I love the elegance with which Darlington Irokanulo’s works burst into an explosion of color, sparking both my imagination and my curiosity. From the very first seconds of our conversation, I was struck by the rare balance he carries as a young, full-time artist — passionate yet grounded.
Art has been Darlington’s calling since childhood. Growing up, he spent countless hours drawing, inspired by cartoons and comics. He understood early on that raw talent needed nurturing, so he pursued a formal art education. His persistence eventually won over his mother, who — like many mothers of artists — had initial doubts about the security of an art career.
Born in 1996 in Lagos, Nigeria, and hailing from Abia State, Darlington holds a degree in Arts from the School of Arts and Design at Yaba College of Technology. His practice blends anthropomorphic forms with intricate lines and designs, fueled by his love for character development and visual storytelling.
Drawing inspiration from his surroundings, Darlington’s paintings document Nigerian society, weaving narratives that carry us between past and present, awakening our awareness of how social life and interactions evolve. His lens is deeply rooted in Afro-culture and retro lifestyles, exploring individuality, trends, and self-consciousness. Through his work, he captures and preserves “golden moments” — the timeless beauty of everyday life — while also envisioning the future.
He invites us to step into the skin of his characters, to experience life from their perspective, and to engage in conversations about time, memory, and identity. Whether in raw or contemporary form, his art becomes a cultural bridge, encouraging us to reminisce, reflect, and treasure the passage of time.
Darlington has taken part in numerous art workshops, group exhibitions, classes, and performances, both as an artist and a volunteer. He is currently working on a new series — one I am very much looking forward to seeing.
Owning one of his paintings is like holding a fragment of time — a burst of color, culture, and memory that will keep speaking to you for years to come.
