Philip Koduah Asare

Visiting Philip’s Instagram page, I was quickly struck by the finesse, poetic beauty, and depth of his work. Contacting him to find out more about him and his artistic world quickly became an obvious choice. After a few email exchanges, Philip and I agreed to a video call.

During this call, I quickly realized that I was dealing with an artist who was not only highly talented but also profoundly visionary. Indeed, Philip’s works originate in his imagination as visions; he first sketches them on his sketchpad, then transposes them to canvas, before refining the work with the help of photographs. It took Philip some time to accept these visions, not knowing what they were, before finally recognizing that they were simply his artistic essence.

In his view, it’s easier for an artist to find their artistic voice by searching deep within themselves, rather than intentionally imbuing themselves with external images or artistic trends. ‘The artist is made to be very deep’.

As such, Philip’s works document human existence and relationships in a visual, but above all metaphorical depth, and explore our connectivity in the natural and social ecosystem.

For me, Philip’s works are to be savored like each line of a gentle poem. They carry me away in a silent tornado of emotions. And writing is where it all began for him. In his diary, he captured the intrinsic details of phenomena and events that marked his life. Then came the urge to represent objects, ideas, thoughts, and emotions in sketches. Now a full-fleshed artist, all these elements take the form of exquisite works that I never tire of contemplating.

My conversation with this artist was a real lesson in the power of the creative soul and the dimension you can give to your art by expressing your vision authentically.

Thank you so much for broadening my artistic awareness, Philip.
