INSPIRATION

As a child growing up in the early 2000s, I vividly remember watching Disney’s science-fiction film Treasure Planet. The story of a young boy journeying across the universe in search of legendary treasure captured my imagination. I became fascinated by the idea of a distant world overflowing with riches and wonders.

As I grew older, however, my perspective changed. I began to realize that the true “Treasure Planet” was never somewhere beyond our reach. It has always been here: Earth itself.

Our planet holds an extraordinary abundance of ecosystems, landscapes, natural resources, flora, fauna, and human cultures. Yet we often overlook the treasures surrounding us while imagining riches hidden somewhere beyond our world.

Africa embodies this paradox profoundly. The continent possesses immense natural wealth, from precious minerals to vast energy resources. In Nigeria, the oil-rich lands of the Ogoni Kingdom offer a particularly powerful example: beneath the earth lies tremendous wealth, yet its presence also raises difficult questions about how we value, use, and protect the resources entrusted to us.

Treasure Planet transforms a childhood fantasy into a reflection on our relationship with the Earth. Why dream of distant planets overflowing with precious resources when extraordinary abundance already exists beneath our feet?

The work ultimately invites us to recognize that true treasure lies not simply in what we can extract from the planet, but in the planet itself. Its resources, biodiversity, cultures, and landscapes form an inheritance whose value depends on our willingness to protect and use it responsibly.

Perhaps the treasure we have spent generations imagining elsewhere has been beneath our feet all along.
