INSPIRATION

The Last Companion is a deeply personal reflection on a life-changing moment when illness stripped away the noise of creative ambition and brought the value of human connection into sharp focus.

The painting depicts a dying African man surrounded by the achievements of his life. Beside him, a robot remains absorbed in its own world, while beneath the bed, a dog quietly shares in his sorrow. This contrast speaks to something technology and material accomplishment cannot reproduce: the profound emotional bond between living beings.

Through this work, I reflect on the importance of balancing creative ambition with meaningful relationships. Our achievements may give shape to our lives, and technology may expand what we are capable of creating, but neither should replace the connections that give those lives meaning.

Rooted in my own experience, The Last Companion became a reminder to reconsider what we value and what we choose to prioritize. Ultimately, the work invites us to cherish those who remain beside us through our most vulnerable moments—and to recognize the irreplaceable value of genuine companionship.
