I Am MAWU
I am MAWU, short for Mawugon (pronounced ma-wu-ŋon), which means “God is good” in Ewe, a language spoken mainly in Togo and Benin in West Africa. Mawu simply means “God”. I share this with you in humble acknowledgment that my art is a channel for something larger than me—born from gratitude, meaning, and a deep sense of purpose.
I was born in France, where I spent a significant part of my life. I also lived in Togo during my childhood and now reside in the Montreal area of Canada. Growing up, if I wasn’t playing soccer, I was drawing for hours on end — often completely absorbed in my own quiet world.
But painting? That came later — and unexpectedly.
One day, I stumbled upon an old, dusty paint box that belonged to my wife. Out of curiosity, I decided to use it to enhance a portrait I had casually sketched weeks before, just to pass the time. This spontaneous experiment quickly awakened something profound in me.
What started as a simple pastime transformed into a fervent artistic quest, revealing a part of myself I had never explored. Today, every brushstroke is both a celebration of hidden beauty and a testament to the transformative power of creativity.
My art is deeply personal — shaped by memory, spirit, and vision — but it’s also an offering: a way to connect, to heal, and to inspire.
I believe that art can bring us back to ourselves. Too often, we allow fear or uncertainty to keep us from dreaming freely. My work invites you to reclaim that voice within, to remember that you, too, were born to create, to feel, and to leap.
A New Chapter: The Gallery
In May 2024, I took a bold leap and launched my online art gallery — a sacred space not only to share my creations but also to amplify the voices of other remarkable artists worldwide.
This gallery is more than a portfolio. It’s a celebration of creative resilience, a platform for artistic storytelling, and a space where community and vision meet. Building it has deepened my love for both art and entrepreneurship, showing me that passion and purpose can walk hand in hand.
WHY MAWU ART GALLERY?
Because it’s time to change the narrative.
For far too long, the world has been told that Africa is a land of need, not of value — a continent to be pitied, not celebrated. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Africa is abundant. It is rich not only in culture, creativity, and spirit, but also in the very materials that power our global future. The continent holds:
Over 60% of the world’s cobalt, essential for electric vehicles and batteries.
Massive reserves of gold, diamonds, lithium, manganese, and bauxite.
An unmatched cultural depth — stories, colors, rhythms, and traditions — that continue to inspire the world over.
And yet, our contributions are too often overlooked, misrepresented, or claimed by others.
MAWU ART GALLERY exists to shift that lens — to affirm that African stories, creativity, and innovation are not only valid but vital. Through art, I aim to challenge stereotypes, amplify voices, and create a legacy that reflects the true richness of who we are.
To every viewer, collector, or dreamer who visits this gallery:
You’re not just witnessing art. You’re experiencing a story unfolding.
A story that says:
Africa has A VOICE — and IT SPEAKS IN BEAUTY.
