INSPIRATION

The word “samara” comes from Bambara, a language commonly used as a lingua franca in West Africa, meaning “shoe.” “Djossi” comes from Nouchi, a slang from Ivory Coast that blends French with various African languages from the region, and it means “work.” Therefore, “Sambara Djossi” literally translates to “shoe workers,” or cobblers.

This painting honors the skilled cobblers of Ivory Coast, traditional shoe repairmen who maintain a vital role in the local economy and culture. Found in bustling markets or street corners, these artisans expertly repair and restore shoes, sandals, and leather goods, often using locally sourced materials.

Their work goes beyond craftsmanship—it’s a symbol of sustainability, community, and heritage. The painting captures the meticulous care and personal connection these artisans share with their customers, celebrating a living tradition that has been passed down through generations and continues to thrive in the modern world.
