INSPIRATION
This piece took quite some time to complete (about a year). It took a considerable amount of research and brainstorming.
I wanted to base this painting on true Egyptology artifacts and symbols; e.g. Isis (woman spreading her wings on the middle left side), who is an ancient Egyptian goddess who became the most popular and enduring of all the Egyptian deities; Anubis (depicted as a man with the head of a jackal on the upper right side), who is the Egyptian god of mummification and the afterlife as well as the patron god of lost souls and the helpless; the Sekhem Scepter (held by the representation of Tutankhamun, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who was the last of his royal family to rule during the end of the 18th Dynasty), which was a symbol of power and control from the Early Dynastic Period onward. In summary, this piece is full of symbolism and ancient history that would honestly take numerous paragraphs to explain.
The main goal of this piece is to convey the Black African contribution to Egyptian civilizations, which is a hypothesis that’s been rejected by mainstream scholars who maintain that, despite the phenotypic diversity of Ancient and present-day Egyptians, applying modern notions of black or white races to ancient Egypt is anachronistic. Anyway, I just wanted to make my point artistically.
