Pierre Segoh

THE ARTIST OF BEAUTIFUL MYSTERIES

Looking specifically for artists from Togo—a country from which I hail—I was delighted to discover the work of Pierre. His style immediately captivated me. At first glance, I was struck by its aesthetic power, but the more I looked, the more I felt I was engaging with something deeper. His artworks weren’t just visual; they felt like enigmas. Each piece revealed something about myself I hadn’t yet known, only to leave me with more questions. It was as if his art spoke in riddles only the soul could understand.

Although I had come across a few press articles about him, they merely scratched the surface. I wanted to know more. So I reached out, and we arranged a WhatsApp call. During our nearly 40-minute conversation, we discussed a range of topics, including his background, artistic endeavors and misadventures, his ambitions, his openness to this project, and our shared hope to one day meet in Togo.

What struck me most about Pierre was his clarity of thought and positive state of mind. As he put it—paraphrasing here—“It is not the environment that defines the artist, but the artist who defines his destiny.” I couldn’t agree more.

Curiously, we spoke about everything except his art. And perhaps that’s how it should be. His art, to me, remains a beautiful mystery—one that’s meant to be felt, not explained. I love his work, and that, ultimately, is what matters most.

Born in Lomé on December 21, 1980, Pierre Akoété Segoh grew up in a warm, supportive family. But in 1997, at the age of 17, life took a tragic turn with the sudden loss of his father. Forced to abandon his studies, he faced the harsh realities of everyday life and stepped into a role of responsibility, determined to support his mother and siblings.

In this hardship, Pierre turned to his natural gift: art. A self-taught visual artist, he found in creativity not only a refuge, but also a way to rebuild his future and assert his identity. Art became his voice, his resistance, and his healing.

Pierre’s artistic approach is deeply introspective. Each work begins with an emotional “autopsy”—an exploration of his feelings, passions, and inner conflicts. He confronts his experiences head-on, transforming raw emotion into a contemporary visual language that resonates on a universal level.

Primarily working with paint and ballpoint pen on canvas and paper, Pierre navigates between small and large formats to explore the many dimensions of the human condition. For him, the first emotion he feels in response to a situation serves as the spark—an ignition that leads to creation.

Through his work, Pierre Segoh invites us to reflect, to feel, and perhaps, to rediscover ourselves. His art isn’t meant to be solved. It’s meant to be lived.
