Naomi Oyeniyi
I find Naomi’s art has the extraordinary power to sensitize and question the viewer through its playful, cryptic compositions. As I contemplate her stunningly aesthetic works, my imagination is fired up and many questions about their messages run through my head.
So contacting this artist to find out more about her fascinating creative world was inevitable.
My video call with Naomi was a delight. I was immediately won over by her smile and the positive energy she exuded, just as her paintings exude joy and optimism.
As a child, Naomi often drew, but she always wanted to become an actress or a supermodel. Her father, sensing her artistic potential long before she realized it herself, often bought her art supplies to practice her craft.
Over time, this hobby turned into a passion which led her to the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (Osun State, Nigeria), where she specialized in painting.
Naomi has been a prolific full-time artist for nine years now. She defines her art as a fusion of personal experiences and inspirations drawn from psychology, spirituality, socio-cultural dynamics, her immediate environment, and her observations of the world.
Her technique involves meticulously layering colors with a palette knife, resulting in fractured lines that merge into figurative subjects. She pays particular attention to detail and uses deliberate brushstrokes to strike a balance between realism, impressionism, and surrealism.
Through her art, Naomi strives to foster empathy, inspire change, and encourage dialogue on psychological, philosophical, spiritual, and societal levels. Her dedication lies in having a lasting and far-reaching impact on her generation and society at large through her creative expression and her commitment to education and social change. I think she’s on the right track, judging by all the questions and ideas her work evokes in me.
Once again, Naomi, your art inspires me enormously and I wish you continued success. Thank you very much for your kindness and professionalism.
