John Akande

As an artist, I find John Akande’s work so beautiful and profound that it was a little intimidating to reach out to him. The depth of emotion and the mastery in his pieces command respect—so much so that I hesitated before sending him a message about joining the ARTssembly. But, as they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. I sent my proposal via Instagram… and to my amazement, he replied within minutes. We arranged a video call for the following day, and I was ecstatic.

During our conversation, as I showered him with praise, John humbly acknowledged his talent, emphasizing, however, that his achievements are rooted in relentless artistic discipline. It’s a discipline he practices daily, refining his skills and pushing his work to ever greater heights.

John Akande is a figurative artist whose vibrant works explore and celebrate natural African culture with a refreshing perspective in an often oversaturated art scene. Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, his early inspirations came from the rich cultural environment around him, as well as the artistic influence of an older sibling. Though self-taught in many respects, he is also a graduate of Yaba College of Technology in Lagos.

John blends expressionism with a touch of realism, working across a wide range of media including acrylic and oil. His bold use of color and visual storytelling make his pieces not just visually striking, but also emotionally therapeutic. Influenced by music and cartoons, his works exude both energy and soul. He has exhibited both locally and internationally, steadily building a unique voice in contemporary African art.

An artist of such caliber undoubtedly deserves wider recognition, and I sincerely hope this platform contributes to that goal. In the meantime, John, please continue to perfect your craft—which, to me, is already profoundly moving. Your work touches me deeply, and I believe it has the power to resonate with audiences all around the world.
