Who AM I?

I'm MAWU, short for Mawugon (pronounced ma-wu-ŋon), which means ‘God is good’ in the Ewe language; a language mainly spoken in Togo and Benin (West Africa). And Mawu simply means ‘God’. I’m telling you this in all humility, of course. I was born in France where I spent a big chunk of my life. I also lived in Togo during my childhood and now I live in the Montreal area (Canada).

When I was younger, I would spend days drawing if I wasn't playing soccer. I started painting on a whim after coming across a dusty paint box that belonged to my wife.

My goal was to beautify a portrait I had drawn a few weeks earlier in a moment of boredom. Little did I know that this little experience would quickly turn into a crazy passion.

MY PROCESS

My artistic approach always begins with an idea or a message to convey. My work certainly aims to take you in an aesthetic dimension, but above all to communicate a deep message by touching on universal topics such as birth, love, hope, the meaning of life, personal development, and spirituality.

I like to mix figurative and abstract elements to create worlds that hover between dream and reality. I mainly use oil paint to materialize my vision but remain open to using any other medium that I feel can enrich my artistic palette and make me evolve as an artist.
